Dishwasher Buyer’s Guide: Built-in or Portable – How Do I Choose?

Kitchens & co

There are a variety of dishwashers to choose from. How do you know which one is the best fit for you? Here are some of the major deciding factors to think about when choosing between a built-in or a portable dishwasher.
  1. Cost

Built-in: Built-in dishwashers are a little more expensive than the portable dishwasher. This is due to the multi-functionality of the built-in. The built-in dishwasher is connected to the sink which gives you the ability to use the dishwasher and the sink at the same time. If your home is used for huge family functions, this appliance is the best fit for you. Portable: Portable dishwashers are cheaper due to the limited access of the sink. You will not be able to run your kitchen faucet and dishwasher at the same time. Portable dishwashers typically have a smaller interior too. These are sufficient for homes that have smaller families.
  2. Space

Built-in: Built-in dishwashers hold a permanent spot in your kitchen, which can limit your storage space. Portable: There’s flexibility on where you can put a portable dishwasher. This dishwasher is great for homes with small kitchens.  If you are the kind of person who likes to rearrange your space frequently, this one could be a winner for you.
  3. Mobility

Built-in: Due to its stationary model, a built-in dishwasher does not have the capability to mobile. This can be convenient or a hassle, depending on a homeowner’s needs. Portable: You can take a portable dishwasher anywhere you wish. If you are a renter or a frequent mover, you can easily take your portable dishwasher to your new home. Even if you are not a mover, having a portable dishwasher will be convenient if you decide to rearrange your kitchen to better suits your needs.
  4. Plumbing

Built-in: Because the built-in dishwasher is connected to the sink, you will have more versatility and control with how you are able to wash your dishes. You can control the water pressure, the type of cycling, and even the temperature of the water. Portable: The portable dishwasher has to be connected to the sink every time you are ready to use it. Because it isn’t fixed to the dishwasher, it will have a weaker water pressure than the built-in dishwasher. Take into consideration your kitchen size, family size, and how many dishes you use a day when choosing a dishwasher. Although there are pros and cons to both, choose the one that will suit your lifestyle the best.
